Artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be everywhere these days – even at the drive-thru line – but one recent application of this technology has got to be universally appreciated. A British telecom company has developed an AI “granny” to combat phone scammers by wasting their time. When a scammer calls the granny, she carries on a conversation for as long as the scammer can stand her incompetence. As she says in the promo video, “I’ve got all the time in the world.” From pretending to not know how to use a computer, to sharing details on her (fake) family members, this AI persona simply ties up the fraudsters’ time meaning they have less time to target real humans. This technology’s real impact on the amount of scam calls we receive is likely to be negligible, but it sure is nice to have the good guys score a point once in a while!
